Oral Hygiene Recommendations When You Have Braces

Posted .

As you may have heard, it’s important to clean your smile while you have braces. This is recommended because having a clean and healthy smile can help you avoid dental and orthodontic issues. So, please do your best to keep up with your oral hygiene routine. To help you properly clean your smile, Dr. Rosendo Garza and our dental team have some guidelines.

Make sure to brush your teeth after you eat. This means you need to scrub your smile after each meal and snack. As you brush, use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Brushing while you have braces might be a bit difficult, so if you have an interdental brush, feel free to use that to clean hard-to-reach areas around your braces.

You need to floss your teeth at least once a day. However, we recommend flossing after you eat, just like brushing. This is important because it can remove food particles from the crevices of your smile that your brush couldn’t reach. As you floss, use the floss threader we gave you. This tool can help make flossing with braces a little easier.

Lastly, rinse your mouth with beneficial mouthwash daily. This can help you clean the areas both your toothbrush and floss didn’t reach and it can help you freshen your breath.
